History: Formerly part of the Colli Piacentini DOC; established as a separate DOC in 2010
Vineyard Area: 1,036 ha / 2,559 acres (2013, V)
Production: 81,410 hl (total 2013/14, V); avg. 852,900 cases bottled annually
Principal Red Grape Varieties: Barbera
Styles and Wine Composition: 

RED WINES
  • Rosso (RdFr): 55–70% Barbera; 30–45% Croatina
  • Superiore (Rosso)
  • Riserva (Rosso)

Subzone:

  • Classico (Superiore and Riserva only)


Significant Production Rules: 

  • Minimum alcohol level: 12.0% for Rosso; 12.5% for Superiore; 13.0% for Riserva
  • Residual sugar: Maximum 17 g/l (1.7%) for Rosso
  • Aging: For Superiore, minimum approx. 5–6 months (ERD = April 1, V+1); for Riserva, minimum 2 years, including 6 months in barrel (ERD = September 1, V+2)
