Styles and Wine Composition: 

WHITE WINES
  • Bianco (Wh): Any proportions of grape varieties approved for the region of Lombardia
  • Varietals (Wh): Minimum 85% of any one of the allowed white grape varieties or of the red varieties Nebbiolo (only under the local name of Chiavennasca), Pignola, or Rossola vinified as a white wine + OANWG
ROSATO WINES
  • Rosato (Ro): Any proportions of grape varieties approved for the region of Lombardia
  • Varietals (Ro): Minimum 85% of any one of the allowed red grape varieties + OANRG
RED WINES
  • Rosso (Rd): Any proportions of grape varieties approved for the region of Lombardia
  • Varietals (Rd): Minimum 85% any one of the allowed red grape varieties + OANRG
  • Novello (Rosso, red varietals)
DESSERT AND SPECIALTY WINES
  • Vendemmia Tardiva Bianco (Wh, WhSw): Same as Bianco or white varietals
  • Vendemmia Tardiva Rosso (Rd, RdSw): Same as Rosso or red varietals
  • Bianco Passito (WhSw): Same as Bianco or white varietals
  • Rosso Passito (RdSw): Same as Rosso or red varietals


Significant Production Rules: 

  • Zone of production: Numerous communes in the province of Sondrio
  • Grapes for Vendemmia Tardiva must be dried exclusively on the vine; grapes for Passito must be dried off the vine in a fruttaio
  • Minimum alcohol level: 10.5% for Bianco, Rosato, and Rosso; 11.0% for Novello; 11.0% for Vendemmia Tardiva (13.0% potential); 12.0% for Passito (16.0% potential)
  • Residual sugar: 45 g/l (4.5%) for Passito (presumably minimum)
  • Aging: For Vendemmia Tardiva and Passito, minimum approx. 6 months (ERD = June 30, V+1)
